Education: B.A. in Cultural Studies University of Buffalo
M.A. University of Illinois at Chicago
I have a B.A. in Cultural Studies from the University of Buffalo and an MA in English Studies from The University of Illinois at Chicago. From 2001 to 2004, I lived in Prague where I taught English as a Second Language and worked on translations of the Czech poet Jan Skacel. Since moving to Chicago, I've worked in several tutoring and writing labs and as a teacher of both College Writing and ESL. Off the job, my activities revolve around various kinds of making: visual arts, music, handmade books, and writing.
Barrett Gordon
Education: B.A. University of Buffalo
After wrapping up my high school days with a healthy chunk of travel, I received my BA in English from the University of Buffalo in 2002, and gravitated to Chicago. My work at the Harold Washington College Writing Lab is additionally informed by and juxtaposed with my interest in the experimental arts. Thus, my strength in the formalities and mechanics of writing is complimented by a flexible appreciation for the writer and the writer's place.

Education: A.A. Harold Washington College
B.A. in History Roosevelt University
I'm currently attending Roosevelt University for my Master's degree in Historical
Studies, with a concentration in World, Early European, and African American
Studies. While at Harold Washington, I was an active member of the Creative
Writing Club and co-editor of Eight magazine. I enjoy writing poetry,
which represents the urban landscape that has shaped my life. Moreover, I enjoy a
good book, especially pulp fiction and am an avid explorer of eclectic musical
landscapes.
Michael Slosek
Education: B.A.in English Canisius College
M.A. in English University of Notre
Dame
I hold a Master's degree in English from the University of Notre
Dame. From 2001-2002, I was a Fulbright Fellow at McGill University. My areas
areas of interest include literary and cultural studies, rhetoric, and critical
examinations of popular culture.
Ilene Sandman
I began my teaching and tutoring experiences at Harold Washington
College in the fall of 1996. I taught English in the Pre-credit Program, have
also taught English 101, here and at Harry S. Truman College, and have been
teaching in the Humanities since 2001 while also tutoring in the Writing Lab.
I have my M.A. in English with extensive academic experience in
Mythology, Literature, Theatre Arts, and Social Sciences. I deem myself a
philosopher, a poet, an essayist, and a frustrated storyteller. Having quit
smoking for about a year and half now, I can sing again--or at least--I
think I can sing again. In the 1980's, I coordinated and directed
poetry workshops, performance poetry, and The Writer's Incentive Team. The WIT
was co-created by me and my then friend Amy. The Team met for three
consecutive years thanks to Laurie--our writing coach. My obsession is
writing. I can do grammar flips, cartwheels, somersaults, and incredible
leaps of syntactical, semantical, and rhetorical facts. That said, I can
write a scathingly honest essay with every tool available to a writer of my
caliber. So, we may ask, why isn't Ilene Sandman a name we see in the book
stores? Good question.
Nancy N. Sullivan
Education: B.A.in Spanish and Political Science University of San Francisco
M.A. in Journalism Marquette University
I am an adjunct instructor
in the English/Speech department of Harold Washington College
where I teach developmental writing and reading. I hold a master's degree in journalism from
Marquette University, and in addition, have earned credits in education and literature from the University
of South Florida. I have a certification in English as a Second/Other Language (ESL) and am completing a study
toward a certification in reading. My bachelor's degree includes a double major in Spanish and political
science from San Francisco College for Women (University of San Francisco), with a minor in philosophy.
I worked as a writer and editor at several newspapers throughout the Midwest before beginning my
teaching career in Florida, where I taught ESL and Language Arts. I taught English in Argentina in 2005
and then moved back home to Chicago and joined the staff at Harold Washington College in 2006.
My interests outside teaching include: my five children and my grandson,
Oscar Beare Sullivan, 2, and working on my (as yet) unpublished manuscripts.
